Sea Training classes are progressive and focus on the following:

  1. Navigation & Piloting – This program teaches the essentials of piloting through familiar and unfamiliar local waterways and open water. We’ll explore a variety of navigation tools, including GPS, Radar, LORAN, VHF radio communications, tides and currents (set and drift), dead reckoning and the “Rules of the Road”. This program is designed for a wide range of boaters, through advanced skill levels, with a desire to increase their marine competency and confidence for cruising Long Island Sound and beyond.

  2. Cruise Planning – Learn the importance of careful planning for your voyages and discover how to utilize great reference materials – including charts and navigational assistance guides. Sea Training classes will guide you through the process of planning and charting your cruising route. Learn how these resources will assist you throughout your journey. This program is designed for all skill levels and is great for boaters who wish to increase their boating expertise and comfort level on the water.

  3. Emergency Procedures & Boating Safety – This topic helps prepare you for handling unexpected situations. While most of your on-water journeys will be problem free, it’s important to know how to handle loss of key equipment, flooding, grounding, severe weather, accidents, fire, onset of inclement weather (i.e,. heavy fog) and man overboard situations. We’ll walk you through pre-trip preparations and offer recommendations for the actions you should take during an on-water emergency. This topic is aimed at boaters of all skill levels, regardless of how far they venture from the dock.

  4. Towing & Salvage – We’ll share important tips on how you can prepare your boat for a tow, simple things you can do to avoid a tow, and how to avoid becoming a salvage statistic. We’ll also briefly explain the salvage process, how marine assistance providers work with your insurance company (should your boat need to be salved), and why your insurance coverage is an essential tool in protecting your investment.
