INTERCARGO: the message of World Maritime Day must travel beyond maritime borders
Never has the theme of this year’s World Maritime Day – “New Technologies for Greener Shipping” – been so in tune with the interest of the shipowner community, says INTERCARGO.
he future is uncertain. But one certainty we have is that reducing emissions is, and will continue to be, the most important global issue facing us,” says INTERCARGO, adding that in 2022, more than at any other time, “we must ensure that the messages emerging from World Maritime Day reach beyond the borders of the shipping industry and that our shipowners, operators and seafarers receive the support they need to play their role in the greener future we all aspire to. ”
The dry bulk sector is arguably the most efficient mode of transporting goods in the world, but our members and those operating in other sectors cannot achieve IMO’s ambition alone
Additionally, the association notes that environmental excellence requires collaboration, and in order to see a future of zero-emission shipping, on this World Maritime Day, the message must reach outside the shipowner community. with a call for help from a wide range of stakeholders.
To achieve truly greener shipping, we need a drastic and urgent acceleration of the commercial development of the necessary technologies, propulsion systems, fuels and related infrastructure; we need tangible plans in place to achieve this; and we need mechanisms to finance this transition
INTERCARGO concluded that it hopes that the work carried out by the IMO and globally by industry in support of World Maritime Day will highlight the need for shipping support and provide a significant boost to the achievement of the ambitious long-term objectives set for it.
